School District: District maintains “C”

Rick Patrick: Greene Publishing, Inc. According to the just-released school grades report from the Florida Department of Education, for the 2017 school year, the grades for the Madison County District show some improvement, although there is still cause for concern. The District’s overall grade remains a “C.” This is unchanged from the 2016 school year. Individually, one school within the District has improved, while another dropped. Most Madison County schools remained the same. Madison County High School improved their grade from a “D” in 2016 to a “C” in 2017….

With the Governor’s signature now firmly placed on House Bill (HB) 7069, the sweeping 270-plus-page education bill passed by the Florida Legislature in a special session, the fate of Madison County’s schools is more uncertain than ever. Crime: Correctional officer arrested

Jamie Wachter: The Suwannee Democrat A Suwannee Correctional Institution officer was arrested Friday, June 23, on charges of introducing contraband into a correctional facility, organized scheme to defraud and official misconduct after entering a relationship with at least two inmates. According to a warrant authorized by Third Circuit Judge Lin Williams on Thursday, June 22, Mattie Gordie Hooker, age 44, of Lee, a corrections officer, delivered a cellphone into the secure facility at the the Suwannee Correctional Institution Annex to an inmate in April.
