Madison County citizens and students are reminded that, despite the recent ruling by the First District Court of Appeals regarding open carry, and the Florida Attorney General recognizing open carry as legal in most public spaces, weapons are still prohibited on all Madison County School District K-12 campuses and properties. This includes school buses. “We want to remind all parents and students that firearms are strictly prohibited on all Madison County K-12 schools and Madison County school properties, including school buses,” said Roderick Williams, Coordinator of Safety for the Madison County School District.
In a statement, Williams highlighted some key points for parents and students to keep in mind:
• Weapons remain prohibited on Madison County schools K-12 campuses and properties, including school buses. The new ruling does not override existing restrictions under Florida law that ban firearms in K-12 schools, school facilities and administrative buildings, except for authorized law enforcement personnel and those specifically designated by the state.
• School safety procedures remain unchanged. School resource deputies will continue to enforce “no weapons” policies on all campuses and will respond immediately to any violations.
• Awareness around school zones. Although individuals may now lawfully carry firearms openly in many public areas, weapons are still prohibited in designated school zone and on school grounds. However, there may be an increase in instances of people openly carrying weapons in areas near schools, which could raise concerns among students, staff and parents.
• Training and communication. Emergency response procedures are regularly assessed and refresher training is offered to Safe School Officers to ensure consistent enforcement and proper handling on incidents involving firearms near school property.
