Mayor Byron Poore resigned his position on Wednesday, July 9, also vacating the district four seat on the Madison City Commission. A special meeting to discuss his replacement will be held on Wednesday, July 16, at 5:30 p.m., at City Hall, located at 321 SW Rutledge St., in Madison.
Poore stated that he intended to resign in the coming months due to a professional opportunity that arose which would not allow him to continue serving on the City Commission because of the potential for conflict of interests.
Poore has been asked to serve as a pension monitor for the firefighters and police officers retirement system. The Board of Trustees approached him in April about taking the position. “My original plan was to stay on through the city manager search,” said Poore. “We are a good portion of the way through that and we have a strong pool of candidates, so I felt comfortable to go ahead and step down. Unfortunately, I don’t see a bright future for the City of Madison.”
