The Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has reported that, at around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, while a deputy was monitoring traffic on Interstate 10 in Madison County, a vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed was signaled to stop but failed to do so. MCSO Capt. Jarrod Lauth said the vehicle was pursued for 10 to 15 miles, and when it was apparent the vehicle would cross the county line, backup was requested from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). According to Lauth, the driver tried to navigate around a semi-truck, at which point it crashed into a light pole and then some trees near the rest stop located near mile marker 238 in Jefferson County.
FHP spokespersons report that the dark-colored Chevy allegedly exceeded 120 miles per hour and that, as of June 13, the driver remained in the hospital. Thus, their investigation is not complete.
