Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Sheriff David Harper reports that on Tuesday, April 7, at approximately 11:45 a.m., an MCSO School Resource Deputy assigned to Madison County High School (MCHS) was contacted by an investigator from the Madison Police Department (MPD) regarding information of a student’s vehicle on campus that possibly contained a handgun. The School Resource Deputy immediately notified school administration of the information received. Additional School Resource Deputies located the suspected vehicle parked behind the gym along with other student vehicles. The vehicle was unoccupied and was locked at the time. School administrators quickly located the male student associated with the vehicle and conducted an interview with the student. During the interview, the student admitted that there was a handgun contained in the center console of his vehicle and provided the keys to the vehicle. A school administrator went to the vehicle and in the presence of School Resource Deputies unlocked the vehicle and opened the center console. A loaded CZ .9mm caliber semi-automatic handgun was located inside the console. A School Resource Deputy collected the handgun securing it as evidence. The 16-year-old male student was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Campus and Possession of a Firearm by a Minor. The investigation into the handgun is on-going and in cooperation with the MPD.
“I am very proud of the quick and appropriate response by our School Resource Deputies and school personnel in removing a weapon from the school campus to further ensure the safety and security of all students, faculty and staff,” said MCSO Sheriff Harper.
