Betty Zembrycki, from Owensboro, Ky., wanted to help her neighbors during the holiday season. The catch was, she wasn't in her hometown of Owensboro. She did not allow that small detail slow her from making an impact where she was. Where she was, was the Madison RV Park at Madison RV and Golf Resort. Zembrycki had an idea of holding a canned food drive among those who were staying at the resort. She contacted Brian Faircloth, president of the resort, who loved the idea and was immediately on board. While Zembrycki began collecting canned goods, Faircloth helped spread the word among those who came out for a round of golf and began collecting canned goods from area golfers. According to Zembrycki, the immediate response was extremely positive. "This food drive brought in people from across the nation and even around the world," said Zembrycki. "We even had someone from South Africa contribute."
Lonnie Allen, from Mississippi, was another RV resident who helped collect food for the drive. "When my wife and I worked for Chevron, we did this sort of thing all the time," said Allen. "Now we stay in an RV and travel around the country. Wherever we are, we love to help the community."
The RV park residents collected approximately 300 to 350 lbs. of various canned goods and other non-perishable food items. These items were later added to the Second Harvest Food Bank distribution at the Chamber of Commerce location on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
"I'm extremely proud of our RV and Golf Resort guest that headed this effort up," said Faircloth. "What an amazing group of people from all over the world that have embraced our community and its needs. As a family, my dad and I promised to give back to our community through this business venture and our guests are helping us deliver on that promise. We are so blessed and thankful!"
These generous folks at Madison RV and Golf Resort prove that even if they are temporary residents, they are the best of neighbors.
