Judge RH Rowe announced this week he would not be a candidate to succeed himself in the upcoming spring primaries. The judge had a long and eventual career in the county and state. He served for several years as Mayor of Madison, was State Representative, and later State Senator for several terms. He was appointed by Governor Dave Sholtz and has been re-elected each time without opposition.

Macedonia Baptist Church was the setting for Miss Mary Ann Bellflower and Mr. Peter Sea III’s wedding. The Rev. R.B. Reynolds performed the double ring ceremony in the presence of friends and relatives. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bellflower of Lee. The groom’s parents were Mr. and Mrs. Peter F. Shea, Jr., also of Lee.

After more than 35 years of business in Madison, Emma and Larry Pinson announced their retirement from Madison Cleaners. Mr. Pinson bought the business from J.T. Wesson in the late 1940’s, where it was located in a building built by Mr. Rayburn Horne on Rutledge Street.

Jan. 14, 1996
A 1995 Toyota was totaled late Sunday Night, when the driver, James Suarez tried to avoid two deer on Highway 221 South of Greenville. According to Florida Highway Patrol, Suarez, 31, was traveling south at an excessive rate of speed when he came upon two deer in the road. Suarez applied his breaks and his car slid off the roadway and traveled 144 feet to where it struck a tree, before continuing on and striking a second tree. At the time of the accident, Suarez was not wearing his safety belt but only sustained minor injuries.
