The intersection of Washington Ave. and Base St. became the scene of an accident, which then resulted in a citation being issued when a driver ran a red light.
Joshua Newman, 22, of Riverview Fl., was traveling west on Base St. in a 2005 tan Chevy four-door. Traveling with Newman, in the vehicle, were Barbara Newman, 21, and Allison Newman, seven months old, both of Riverview, Fl.
According to the City of Madison Police reports, Newman ran the red light that directed traffic at the intersection of Base St. and Washington Ave. and his vehicle collided with the beige Honda Accord that was being driven by Thomas Bennett, 76, of Greenville.
Bennett was traveling north on Washington Ave. and held the right-of-way by indication of a green streetlight.
Traveling with Bennett was Joyce Bennett, 76, also of Greenville.
Newman, when approached, admitted to having run the red light.
All drivers and passengers denied on-scene medical treatment and signed a medical waiver.
While Bennett’s vehicle was towed off-scene by Ben’s Towing Company, the vehicle Newman drove was removed from the scene of the crash by the owner, Charlie Carter, of Lee.
Four witnesses were present at the scene and were acknowledged in the official Madison Police Department report.
Newman was given a citation with the charge of failing to stop at a red light.
