⁃ “Men may die, but the fabrics of free institutions remains unshaken.”
⁃ Oversaw the largest expansion of the U.S. Navy.
⁃ Vetoed the first version of the Chinese Exclusion Act, but signed the second.
⁃ Enforced the Immigration Act of 1882, imposing more restriction on immigrants.
⁃ Enforced the Tariff of 1883 in an attempt to reduce tariffs.
