In response to the governor’s declaration, Jefferson County Emergency Management (JCEM) is making sandbags available for free to residents. Residents must bring shovels with them, but the sand and bags are available at three locations that will be open from sunrise to sunset and will remain so while conditions permit.
These locations are the Fire Rescue station at 57 Martin Road in Monticello; the old post office in Lloyd, at 8781 Old Lloyd Road; and the solid waste disposal site and fire station in Wacissa.
Madison County Central School (MCCS) will open at five p.m. on Tuesday as an emergency shelter. The MCCS shelter is pet-friendly. If you are bringing your pets, make sure that they are contained in a crate or carrier. There is a special area for pets, and make sure to bring any items to take care of your pets. Also, make sure to bring proof of vaccinations. Anyone on oxygen is encouraged to come to the shelter. This shelter will also have a separate area for any special medical needs. The MCCS shelter is also providing MREs (meals ready to eat) and water. Any special food needs or comfort items (mattresses cots; etc.) need to be brought.
