The Senior Citizens Council of Madison County wrapped up Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special event on Friday, Oct. 30. The event was designed to not only bring awareness of the disease to the forefront, but to also celebrate survivors of breast cancer.
One of the highlights of the event was hearing the stories of faith and courage from several survivors who each told their story. The keynote speaker was Iris Jonas-Hawthorne, a cancer survivor who told her story of resilience. She spoke of enduring numerous rounds of chemotherapy treatments, along with radiation therapy. Jonas-Hawthorne is originally from Madison, but now lives in Albany, Ga.
