During the regular meeting of the Madison County District School Board on Monday, Aug. 3, the Board passed a tentative budget and millage rate for the upcoming year. As required by law, this was a public hearing of the proposed budget and millage rate. The proposed millage rate is broken down into three parts, with each part passed individually by the Board. The Required Local Effort millage rate is tentatively set at 3.168 mills. The Local Capital Outlay rate is 1.5 mills. The Discretionary/Optional rate is 0.748 mills. The total tentative millage rate is 5.416 mills. The total tentative budget for the school district is $35,948,653. The final budget and millage rate approval is set for a vote during the regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
While the Board was discussing personnel changes, Board Chair Carol Gibson questioned if a separate secretary was needed for the Transportation Department. After discussion, it was determined that, although money does need to be saved, cutting that position would not be the best way to save funds. A new transportation secretary was approved on a unanimous vote by the Board.
