If you have an elderly family member living alone, or know of someone, you should encourage them to become part of the “Silver Star” program through the Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The program is completely voluntary and is completely free to those who participate.
Each day, an MCSO Communications Officer or a designated volunteer will call the participant between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to simply check on the participant. If the call does not get answered after a couple of attempts, a deputy will be dispatched to the address provided in order to check on the participant in person. The caller will also reach out to the participant’s emergency contact or key holder, if necessary.
When elderly citizens live alone, they can be prone to falls and other emergency situations. The Silver Star program is just one more way to help provide a level of security, while still allowing an elderly person to live independently.
To sign up for the Silver Stars program, completely free of charge, visit https://madisonflsheriff.org/silver-star-program/. You may also call the MCSO at (850) 973-4151 or Maj. Doug Haskell, with the MCSO, at (850) 253-3311.
