Tuesday, Aug. 18 is the day voters will be going to the polls to whittle down long lists of candidates running for state and national offices. However, there are a number of local offices all voters in Districts One, Two and Five, regardless of political party affiliation will be deciding.
Voters in District One will decide their new County Commissioner to complete the term of former Commissioner Alston Kelley, who resigned earlier this year. Those seeking that seat are: Chris O’Brian, Daniel Lee Plain and Gregory Vickers. District One voters will also choose a School Board member from Katie Knight or Byron Poore. In each of these races, to candidate receiving the most votes will be the winner.
In District Two, voters will decide their representative on the County Commission. The candidates running for that seat are: Will Oberschlake, Tyler Shadrick and Wayne Vickers.
All registered voters in District Five may choose from a field of three candidates to serve on the Madison County School Board. The candidates are: Donnell Davis, Mike Maurice and Jonathan Mazzella. If any of the candidates in this race receive greater than 50 percent of the vote, that candidate will be determined to be the winner. If no candidate receive greater than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face each other in a runoff election in November.
Early voting is still on-going until Saturday, Aug. 15. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. On Saturday, the hours are 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Voters may vote at any of several locations during early voting. Those locations are:
• The Madison County Supervisor of Elections Office (in the back), 239 SW Pinckney St., in Madison
• Lee City Hall, 286 NE County Road 255, in Lee
• Greenville American Legion, 133 SW Broad Ave., in Greenville
• Pinetta Volunteer Fire Dept., 509 NE Persimmon Dr., in Pinetta
On Election Day, voters must vote in their assigned precinct. The precinct location can be found on the back of the voter’s identification card. On Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
