Greene Publishing is excited to announce the establishment of a Newspaper in Education program for the Madison County Carrier. Every day, educators throughout Florida rely on Newspaper in Education (NIE) materials in their local paper as a primary source of informational text to enhance their students' reading, writing and thinking skills. Through the NIE program, sponsors support the cost of educational partners.
What is NIE?
NIE is an international program that promotes literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. Through NIE programs, teachers use newspapers as a “living textbook” to teach subjects such as history, reading, math, economics and government at all grade levels.
How can NIE benefit students?
Research shows that students using the newspaper as an educational resource develop the habit of lifelong reading, are more likely to become engaged citizens and regular voters and score more highly on standardized tests. Using the newspaper as an educational resource helps students to:
- Develop a better understanding of their community, state, nation and world
- Cultivate critical thinking, reading and
writing skills - Clarify and develop decision-making skills
- Improve math and problem-solving skills
How can NIE serve educators?
NIE serves educators and students by providing schools with educational resources such as:
- Free, sponsored or subsidized print newspapers
- Free, sponsored or subsidized access to newspapers’ digital editions and other online resources
- Original, standards-based curricula
- Free lesson plans and teacher guides
- Free or low-cost teacher workshops and other professional development opportunities
- Teacher appreciation and recognition programs
- Student contests and special programs
How can community partners become sponsors?
Greene Publishing offers opportunities for NIE sponsors to support this literacy program and be recognized weekly in the newspaper. Monetary support from schools, businesses, civic groups, government agencies and individuals to sponsor educational subscriptions go directly into Greene Publishing’s NIE fund and are used only to subsidize local educational subscriptions and NIE curriculum services. Sponsors are recognized every week on the special NIE page as well as at the end of the year in a special sponsor thank-you page.
