I often wear a ballcap that identifies me as a Vietnam War veteran. Fifty years ago, I wouldn’t have done that, but times have changed and I’m proud of my service. Often, strangers will thank me for my service, to which I kindly return their thanks. Rarely do people take the next step and ask me what I did during the war. That’s okay, but I am happy to tell them if asked.
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, the Democrat vice-presidential nominee, is a veteran too, but he seems to have embellished his record, claiming things he didn’t do or accepting praise from politicians who make claims on his behalf. They don’t know what they are talking about. Be careful when you cross outside your lane of expertise.
