I have talked about the subject of socialism in this space before, but my references may be ambiguous, particularly to younger people with little ‘real world’ experience and poor education. An issue came up last week that gives me an opportunity to illustrate socialism, where the government dictates the means of production.
In 2024, the Biden Administration issued a rule (aka mandate) that the industry-wide average for fuel economy would be 50 mpg on all light vehicles by 2031. Two-thirds of conventionally fueled vehicles would no longer be manufactured in America by that time. Instead, most of us would be driving electrically powered vehicles – EVs, instead. Biden’s edict was an act of socialism, where the government tells you what to buy and drive indirectly by forcing the manufacturers to limit choices. Why did he do this? Climate change hysteria and greenhouse gas emissions were driving his agenda.
