Madison County Sheriff David Harper reports that late Monday night on July 31, at 11:55 p.m., Deputy Tyler Andrews observed a white utility vehicle run a stop sign at the intersection of SW Bunker Street and SE Duval Avenue and continued traveling at a high rate of speed on SE Duval Avenue. Deputy William Terry was traveling north on SE Duval Avenue and utilized his speed measuring device to determine the vehicle to be traveling 70 miles per hour in a posted 35 miles per hour zone.
The vehicle continued to travel at a high rate of speed on SE State Road 53 and made a right turn onto SW Harvey Greene Drive. Deputy Andrews activated his emergency lights and siren while initiating a pursuit on the utility vehicle as it made a right turn onto SR 14, failing again to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of SW Harvey Greene Drive and SR 14. The vehicle began traveling north on SR 14 at a high rate of speed until turning left onto SW Ganzy Avenue. The vehicle continued fleeing from Deputy Andrews at a high rate of speed, failing to stop at every stop sign on SW ER Scott Street to SW Brookwood Avenue to SW Bentley Street until crashing into a tree at 618 SW Georgetown Rd.
The driver immediately exited the truck and began fleeing on foot into a wooded area from Deputy Andrews as he was continuing the pursuit on foot. Deputy Andrews was able to apprehend the subject approximately 100 yards into the wooded area. A struggle ensued as the suspect actively resisted by grabbing Deputy Andrews’ weapon with both hands and attempted to remove it from the secured holster. Deputy Andrews was able to gain control of the suspect while maintaining security of his weapon.
Responding units quickly arrived on scene and the subject was successfully taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Jail without further incident. A search was conducted on the vehicle which discovered a clear plastic bag with 42 individual blue baggies, a black plastic scale, two clear individual baggies containing a green leafy substance which appeared to be marijuana with a weight of three grams. The subject’s wallet was located inside the vehicle which contained two white napkins wrapped in tape containing an unknown blue leafy substance which was sent to the lab for further analysis.
Danterius Howard, of Greenville, Fla., was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding (1 ct.), aggravated assault on LEO (1 ct.), possession of marijuana less than 20 grams (1 ct.), possession of drug paraphernalia (1 ct.) and reckless driving (1 ct.).
