At approximately 11:55 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 1, Patrol Officer Frederick J. Korey and Patrol Officer Joseph E. Smith were dispatched to Springhill Apartments in Madison due to O’Terrian T. McDaniel, aka "O.T.," trespassing after previous warning. Ptl. Korey located McDaniel near the complex’s playground and intercepted him. When McDaniel verbally resisted, Ptl. Korey informed him that he was under arrest, grasped his arm, and instructed him to turn around to be handcuffed. McDaniel escalated his resistance to the point he broke free from Ptl. Korey and fled on foot. Ptl. Korey pursued McDaniel and issued repeated verbal commands before closing the distance, deploying his taser and gaining control of McDaniel. At that point, McDaniel was handcuffed and placed under arrest for trespass after warning and resisting an officer without violence. McDaniel then directed profanity and threats of bodily harm at Ptl. Korey.
McDaniel continued these threats of physical harm towards Ptl. Korey as he transported him to the Madison County Jail. After arriving at the jail, McDaniel continued his belligerent and hostile behavior, and he directed racial slurs at Ptl. Korey and Ptl. Smith. McDaniel continued his threats that he would physically attack, sexually assault and kill Ptl. Korey in his holding cell. McDaniel continued his uncooperative behavior, and he refused to release his personal property to the jail staff. McDaniel charged Detention Deputy D. Hawkins and “chest bumped” him pushing him backwards. Due to McDaniel’s continuing hostile and combative behavior, Detention Deputy Hawkins requested additional assistance to retrieve McDaniel’s property. Madison County Sheriff’s Office Sgt Scott P. Newman responded to this request. McDaniel refused to comply with Sgt. Newman’s instructions, so Sgt. Newman deployed his taser to gain control of McDaniel and facilitate handcuffing. Due to his ongoing violent behavior, McDaniel was then secured in a restraint chair. McDaniel was eventually processed for trespass after warning, resisting an officer without violence, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
