Major John Haynes, Madison native and Monticello resident, was awarded the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) Medal of Honor on Wednesday, March 9. This is the highest medal awarded by the D.A.R., and the ceremony took place in the Cabinet Room of the Florida Capitol.
Major Haynes is a highly decorated veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, serving for 30 years in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). Early in his military career, Haynes was recognized for his bravery and innovation, especially when dealing with explosive ordinance disposal. He has worked tirelessly to help fellow veterans access benefits and other services since his retirement in 1975. Haynes learned of his latest honor through a letter he received from Governor Ron DeSantis. “Your courage is appreciated,” said DeSantis. “On behalf of all Floridians, let me thank you for your service.” DeSantis went on to declare Wednesday, March 9 as “Major John L. Haynes Day” for the state of Florida. Haynes was presented the award by General James F. Hartsell and Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis. In his presentation speech, Hartsell remarked that “Major Haynes has only failed one time in his life. That was when he tried to join the USMC at the age of 13.” Included among Haynes' many supporters at the ceremony were Madison natives, Richard and David Wilson and Haynes' daughter, Susan Carabello.
