Over Memorial Day weekend, the American Legion Post 224, in Cherry Lake, placed 260-plus U.S. flags around the courthouse, Four Freedoms Park and along the front of Madison Community Bank. This has become an annual event for the veteran-based service organization. It is also a fundraiser for the American Legion post to raise funds for the many community service projects the post undertakes throughout the year.
Leading up to Memorial Day, citizens from across the community sponsored individual flags. Signs were placed in front of the flags identifying the flag's sponsor. The flags will continue to wave through the Fourth of July holiday. The flags will be presented to their sponsor during a special “Business After Hours, held at Legion Hall, in Cherry Lake, on Tuesday, July 19. There will also be a special flag retirement ceremony held that evening.
