The Madison County School Board closed out their Monday, Nov. 17, meeting with a strong focus on gratitude, student achievement and recognition of employees across the district. With Thanksgiving approaching, board members reflected on the rapid pace of the school year and the busy months ahead, including winter holidays, spring testing and statewide leadership training events.
Superintendent Karen Pickles noted how quickly the semester is moving, reminding the community that once the holidays pass, schools immediately enter testing season. She extended warm Thanksgiving wishes to families and staff, and highlighted the upcoming obligations including the regular board meeting, a board workshop and the FSBA-FADSS training.
The Board also reviewed the status and performance of Madison County’s electric school buses, which are in the trial period until they can be fully implemented into the transportation system. Transportation Director Kevin Rogers reported that the buses are running smooth overall, with only minor maintenance issues so far. The district is still monitoring long-term expenses, but early data indicates the buses are saving on fuel compared to traditional diesel models. Board members emphasized the importance of continuing to track repair costs, better performance and grant-funding opportunities as the bus fleet expands. While the progress has been steady, board members noted the need for additional information before moving forward with the next step. After a notion by School Board Members VeEtta Hagan and Katie Knight, the board agreed to revisit the issue either at the December meeting or in a special called session if timing becomes critical.
Attorney Tom Reeves took the floor to update the board on the status of an on going legal matter with North Florida Child Development. He explained that the district is preparing for a motion for temporary injunction and is reviewing the lease presented by the opposing party. While the lease dates from 2003-2023 and includes a renewal clause, the district has found no documentation showing any timely renewal. The motion expected to be finalized by Friday Nov. 21.
Board members also celebrated major academic accomplishments across the district, and heartfelt farewells to several rewriting educators. Suzanne Griffin and Glendel Presley, both longtime Madison County High School teachers with advanced degrees, were recognized for years of service. The board also honored Philip Hackle, a 22-year employee described as a “jack of all trades” who’s contributions across the district will be greatly missed.
In addition to staff recognition, the board highlighted the district’s strong community and student involvement. Veterans Day ceremonies at multiple schools such as Madison County Central School, James Madison Preparatory High School and Madison Creative Arts Academy, were all praised for teaching students respect, patriotism and civic awareness.
Board members also applauded the many students who achieved perfect attendance, emphasizing that such consistency requires equal dedication from both students and parents. Athletic and extracurricular achievements were also noted, including the Cowboys’ playoff victory, golfer Kadence Eastham’s 16th-place finish at regionals and the FFA chapter’s successful trips to the National Convention and the Northwood Fair.
A major point of celebration was the recognition of the district’s School-Related Employee of the Year, awarded to Michelle Carter of Madison County High School. Other honorees included Tammy Richardson, Barry Cruz, Gracie Thompkins, Jennifer Hendry and Morgan “Buster” Scurry. Board members expressed appreciation for all nominees.
Newly appointed board chair Devin Thompson announced an upcoming initiative to celebrate district employees through “staff shoutouts” at future meetings. Staff will be able to nominate colleagues for recognition by sharing positive stories and outstanding contributions.
Before adjuring, members exchanged Thanksgiving well-wishes, encouraging families to enjoy rest, time together and the holiday break. The next meeting is set for Monday, Dec 1.
