On Thursday, April 8, at 8 a.m., deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) and correctional staff and officers from the Florida Department of Corrections' (FDOC) Madison Correctional Institution joined together for their annual torch run.
Participants ran through the City of Madison, traveling south on Range Avenue before cutting over west on Dade Street and back north onto Horry Avenue and finishing down Base Street at the western end of the city limits.
The torch runs are held every year in support of Special Olympics. Over 300 law enforcement agencies in Florida partake in the runs, including police departments, sheriff's offices, the FDOC, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), U.S. Customs, Air Force Police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC). The torch run helps raise funds through the purchase of the shirts.
