On Friday, May 22, Madison County resident Joel Alvarado was traveling on I-75, near Cook County, Ga., when he suddenly came upon an awful crash. A semi crashed into a wall and quickly caught fire. His heroic actions helped save a man’s life, but resulted in his receiving severe burns on his legs.
He noticed that the driver of the involved semi was still in the cab of his truck, apparently unconscious. Alvarado is a retired paramedic and was instantly aware that his services were needed. Dangerous puddles of ignited fuel surrounded the semi and Alvarado knew he must act quickly. He jumped into the cab of the truck, according to witnesses, and began shaking the driver to help him regain consciousness.
Fortunately, the driver responded well and was able to exit the truck without assistance. Alvarado, the driver and others nearby began their escape from the area when an explosion occurred, resulting in second and third degree burns on Alvarado’s legs, which were suddenly engulfed in flames.
He has since been recovering in an area hospital. He will be unable to work for some time and is in need of assistance to help with medical bills. Alvarado has a GoFundMe account, gofund.me/eecb8ceb7, where you can assist in his recovery. You may also use the QR code accompanying this article to make a donation. Alvarado is grateful for the outpouring of support received so far, making the difficult days ahead more bearable.
