Anyone passing by one of Madison's popular landmarks, Lake Francis, may have noticed a big change since Tuesday, Oct. 12. The popular dock and fishing pier that extended out onto the lake from the pavilion has been dismantled and removed. This was done due to the deterioration of the wood on the pier that had taken place over the years.
The pier was originally built in late 1996, with funding by a Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) grant. In recent years, the City of Madison had spent a great deal of money and manpower replacing boards, etc. that had rotted and corroded, due to natural wear and exposure to the elements. Earlier this year, it was determined that the pier was not safe and the decision was made, in consultation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Division of State Lands and Land and Recreation Grants Section, to dismantle the structure.
During the regular meeting of the Madison City Commission, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, a $14,360 bid was awarded to CM Brandies for the dismantling and removal of the structure. The pavilion was left intact. According to Madison City Manager, Jerome Wyche, it is hoped that the wooden pier/dock will be replaced with an aluminum, floating pier/dock, similar to the one currently in use at Cherry Lake. An aluminum pier would have a much longer life span and would require little, to no, maintenance. Research is currently underway to determine the cost of a safe and suitable replacement.
Funding sources are being sought to help cover the cost of a new pier. If any community groups, businesses or individuals would like to help with a donation, they are encouraged to contact Wyche at City Hall. Wyche can be reached at (850) 973-5081.
