I am Daniel Lee Plain, a Republican Candidate for Madison County Commissioner District 1. I am 58 years old, and I am native of Florida. I have lived in Madison County for 57 years. I am a 1986 graduate of Madison County High School. I have been married to my High School Classmate, Gena Stokes Plain, for 37 years. Gena and I have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. I am a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
I am a State Licensed Underground Utility and Plumbing Contractor in Florida and Georgia. I am a Licensed Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in Florida. I am Co-Owner of Lester D. Plain & Son, LLC, a construction business located in Madison County since 1969. In the past, I have been employed by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, under Sheriff Joe C. Peavy. I have been employed by the Town of Greenville and the City of Madison, as a Wastewater and Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator. I was also employed by the Town of Lee as Town Manager.
I believe that a County Commissioner should listen to the Citizens of Madison County and reflect their voices in decisions that are made. I want to promote responsible infrastructure improvements, affordable economic development and a better quality of life for all citizens of Madison County. I want to make smart use of taxpayer dollars, through transparency, efficiency, and integrity. I firmly believe in government in the sunshine.
I firmly believe that the powers held by the Madison County Board of County Commissioners, come from the citizens of Madison County.
I feel that my life experiences, licenses, and certifications have given me more knowledge on how to be a successful County Commissioner. As a State Licensed Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, I feel that I have a great understanding of the issues that could affect the safe and clean drinking water supply in Madison County. As a State Licensed Construction Contractor, I feel that I have a substantial understanding of Building, Road, and Infrastructure Construction Projects. I am well versed in the understanding of construction plans, project bidding, project management, and successful execution and completion of construction contracts. As a former Deputy Sheriff, I have a good understanding of the needs of our local law enforcement. As a former Town Manager, I have more than a basic understanding of the daily operations of a small-town government.
If Proposed Florida Amendment 3 is passed, an increase in the Homestead Exemption thresholds could lead to less property tax revenue for Madison County. This can be addressed by being more proactive, in the strict adherence to the most efficient use of taxpayer money, and how services are made available to the citizens. As a private business owner, I understand the need for efficiency, in my own local small business for survival.
I am opposed to the increase or creation of additional taxes or special assessments, in order to address any future short-fall in property tax collection. Whether or not I am elected as County Commissioner for District 1, my proposal to Madison County remains the same as a fellow citizen.
I believe in lower taxation. I promote efficiency and accountabilty in the use of taxpayer money, to protect and support the best quality of life possible, for the citizens of Madison County. I believe in protecting our drinking water supply. I believe in protecting our agricultural and forest lands. I stand against government overreach into the daily lives of the citizens of Madison County. Our county government should only take the role of supporting an acceptable and basic quality of life for the citizens.
I believe that I have a very good understanding of what it means to be an employee, an employer, and a small local business owner.
In closing, I would like to say that I am opposed to the construction of Data centers in Madison County. I have an issue with any commercial business activity that could adversely affect our natural resources and the beauty of Madison County. Plus, I wouldn’t want one located in my own backyard. We need to seek more commercial businesses that provide real jobs for real people. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a Citizen of Madison County.
I believe that a County Commissioner is tasked with supervising the operation of Madison County Government. The responsibility to do this successfully and efficiently rests with a five member Board. If elected, I promise to take on this task very seriously. My pride, my beliefs, and my integrity, have never, nor shall ever, be for sale or rent.
