At the Tuesday, Sept, 6 Madison County School Board meeting, citizens raised concern about the Madison County High School (MCHS) homecoming parade being cancelled for this year. The decision to forego the homecoming parade had been made by the calendar committee, according to Superintendent of Schools Doug Brown. Several members of the school board expressed dismay at the fact that they knew nothing of the decision to not have a homecoming parade. “This parade is an opportunity to showcase our students. We should have this parade,” said VeEtta Hagan, School Board Chairman and District 3 board member.
According to Brown, there had been dwindling participation in the parade over the last several years. “Last year we only had one float,” said Brown.
Bart Alford, School Board member from District 5 made a motion that Homecoming Day (Friday, Oct. 14) be made into a school holiday and that the parade take place on that day. Kenneth Hall, School Board member from District 2, seconded that motion. The motion was passed unanimously.
