According to information provided by Madison County Fire Rescue (MCFR) Chief Allen Clayton, MCFR personnel responded to a call regarding a fire in one of the rooms at the Deerwood Inn Motel, on Hwy. 53 South. The call was received at approximately 2 p.m. and an MCFR crew was on scene in less than five minutes. When firefighters arrived, a mattress in one of the rooms was on fire. Thanks to the close proximity of the new Lee Fire Station and the quick response of the firefighters, the fire was contained to the mattress and did not spread to other areas. Chief Clayton said it appeared that a hair dryer had been left on the mattress while turned on and overheated, causing the fire to erupt. Chief Clayton stated the entire incident took less than 20 minutes.
