It is a project that has been in the works for many months. In fact, by original estimates, Greenville's new grocery store should have been completed and opened by now. However, delays in the starting of the much anticipated project have pushed the opening back time and time again. That is all about to change as groundbreaking is planned for Wednesday, March 24, at 5 p.m.
During the town council meeting on Monday, March 8, Greenville Town Manager Lee Jones proposed a pair of options for the council to consider. The option chosen by a consensus vote of the council would have resulted in a delay until mid-May before the clearing of the current building in that site and the erection of the new building. This delay was decided in order to save approximately $30,000 in costs. Regardless of which start date was chosen, the completion date remained the same. According to Jones, the completion date is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 10.
This grocery store is one part of a larger revitalization plan that is being funded by various grants and includes a community center that has yet to be opened to the public. According to Ed Dean, former town manager for the Town of Greenville, the new community center contains or will contain: a gym, with exercise equipment; televisions, computers, furnishings and room enough to easily seat over 100 people, even with social distancing.
The groundbreaking is set to take place on Wednesday, March 24, at 5 p.m., adjacent to Greenville Town Hall.
