During a short special meeting of the Greenville Town Council on Monday, March 30, the council discussed an agreement with the Madison County District School Board regarding the Greenville Elementary School property. In negotiating the deal, several desires of the School Board were brought up. The primary one being a restriction on another K-12 school going into the site. This restriction would not prevent the offering of tutoring services or apprenticeships to students. The Town Council did not express any objection to that desire. The Town Council authorized the town’s attorney, John Reid, to express to the School Board their desire to move forward.
Reid gave the Town Council an update on the lease of space on the town’s water tower to be used to provide cell phone service through T-Mobile. An agreement was expected to be brought before the Council during their next regular meeting.
Reid informed the Town Council that there were issues with a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant that was being used to help fund the long-awaited grocery store for the town. Reid stated that, after performing a site visit, the USDA decided to terminate the grant. There were apparent problems with communication between the Town and the USDA. The Town is in the process of appealing that decision.
The next regular meeting of the Greenville Town Council is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 11, at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Greenville Senior/Youth Center, located at 152 SW Onslow St., in Greenville.
