I have told the story many times that when I first began writing this column, I wanted it to be light-hearted and sometimes humorous. I wanted to focus on the “positive” because there's already plenty of “negative” in the news. For the most part, I think I have succeeded in that endeavor, with a few exceptions. I'll give you fair warning now. This will be one of those exceptions. I am fortunate to have this forum in which I can freely speak my mind. I will never take that fact for granted, especially considering the knowledge that many do not have such a luxury. With that, there are times when I feel compelled to say something. I have been watching in horror, along with many in the world, the atrocities going on in the country of Ukraine. These innocent people have had the horrors of war thrust upon them through no fault of their own by a truly evil and despicable creature, Vladimir Putin. This “Poot-head” is, as I write this, murdering hundreds of innocent men, women and children for no other reason than his own ego, ambition and unbridled thirst for power. I know there are many who may say, “What can we do? Ukraine is way over in Europe. What 'national interest' would be served by becoming involved? Who is my neighbor?” I am not advocating sending American young men and women over to Ukraine to take part in further sparking the fire that could easily become World War Three (time may prove that match has already been struck). But I cannot and will not idly sit by and do nothing while thousands suffer and then say, “Gosh, that 'Poot-head' sure was a bad guy to have invaded his neighbor and killed all those children in the process.” I will fight back. Not with a gun, but with the most powerful weapon I have at my disposal. When Jesus was asked, “who is my neighbor?” he responded with the story of the Good Samaritan. I'm sure we are all familiar enough with the story that I don't need to repeat it here. Bottom line is, everyone can be considered our neighbor. We should be concerned with all our fellow humans when they are hurting, even if there's no apparent “benefit” to helping them. I have taken the liberty of finding a couple of ways you can help those suffering in Ukraine and striking your own blow against the evil taking part over there. First, you can pray for the innocent people there. That can be pretty powerful, but even more powerful if there's some action behind that prayer. I ask you to make a monetary donation to help the people of Ukraine, especially the children. There are three charities that are currently working to help with humanitarian aid. They have been vetted and have proven to be trusted charities. I encourage you to visit their websites and please donate while you are there. One is www.hearttoheart.org. Another is www.samaritanspurse.org. The third is www.savethechildren.net. There is even a site at which you can donate directly to the Ukrainian military, although I cannot vouch for the trustworthiness of that one. It is savelife.in.ua. If you feel the need to donate there, do so at your own risk. Where ever you chose to donate, please, let's fight back. Hopefully, the people of Ukraine may be able to enjoy the “sunny side” again, soon.
