I had a conversation with someone recently and a thought hit my mind. That's not unusual for a thought to hit my mind. Sometimes, a really good thought hits my mind and I deem it to be worth sharing. Other times, the thought doesn't quite measure up to standards, and I allow the thought to merely wither on the vine. Then, there are those times when a brilliant thought enters my mind and proceeds to wither on the vine as quickly as it blossomed. Those are the really aggravating kind. Fortunately this particular thought managed to live long enough for me to transfer it from the grey matter between my ears to the black and white of words on a page.
My thought was, "What would happen if this community exhibited the same kind of unity throughout the week as we do on Friday nights on Boot Hill?" I honestly feel one of the more positive aspects of high school football (aside from the tremendous learning experiences it affords to the young athletes) is the sense of community spirit it engenders among everyone, regardless of individual background.
What could be accomplished if we approached every issue in the community with that same kind of "Cowboy unity?" What if we approached everything as one team, regardless of skin color? What if we cared for each other as members of the same team, regardless of where we worshipped on Sunday, or whatever day we choose to worship or even how we choose to worship?
Some may think this is a crazy idea. I happen to think it's an idea that is worthy of serious consideration. I hope and pray it doesn't turn out to be another idea that merely "withers on the vine." Just a few thoughts for everyone to ponder while we are here … on the sunny side.
