Those of you who are and have been frequent participants in our weekly visits know that I have had an off and on goal of improving my health. Chief among that is getting rid of some of the excess luggage that has seemed to find its way around my mid-section. As I look around at other guys who are of approximately the same age as I happen to be, I notice that this is not an uncommon trait.
I am reminded of something funny I heard a while back. When asked if a friend was “in shape,” he responded with, “Yes, I am in shape. Round is a shape.” Hard to argue with that kind of logic. However, I do strive to attain a shape other than “round.” Sure, the bit of vanity I do possess feels the need to look better. However, I also realize that, along with looking better, the health benefits will be even greater with the transformation of my particular “shape.”
I had someone tell me once that I had a “pear” shape. I admit, that wasn’t exactly the fruit analogy for which I was hoping. Perhaps there is a bit more than a grain of truth in that fruitful comparison. I’m not quite sure which fruit would yield a more complimentary comparison; perhaps a strawberry, depending on the way in which it is held.
One little accomplishment I have noticed in my quest to reshape my shape is the fact that I can easily tighten my belt another hole tighter. Actually, I am on the cusp of being able to tighten it two holes tighter, but that is not quite at the comfort level I would want.
There’s an old proverb that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Now preferably, that single step is towards an airport. But, it’s still good to remember that big goals often consist of smaller goals. No matter if it’s a single step in a journey of a thousand miles, or a single hole in a waist belt. Whatever goals you have, I hope you are successful in attaining them, one belt hole at a time, here on the Sunny Side.
