I was recently blessed to receive a First Place award for “Humorous Column” at the recent Florida Press Association Convention in Orlando. I am very honored and humbled to receive such an accolade. Of course, I don’t do what I do in order to receive any kind of award. I feel much more honored knowing I have brought a smile to some faces and perhaps a chuckle or two. I have had the opportunity to try my hand at stand-up comedy. I have to say, it is not easy. Since I had that one experience, I have started to pay close attention to the comedians who are very masterful at telling stories that are funny and that can keep the attention of the folks who are (hopefully) listening. I've noticed that many good comedians have a good “tag line” around which they center much of their material. For instance, Jeff Foxworthy has his “You might be a redneck if …,” or Bill Engvall's “Here's your sign” and, of course, who could forget Larry the Cable Guy and his “Git 'er done?” Well, I have decided my “tag line” is going to be “just sayin'.” I won't say it's entirely original, but I like it. It has a way of communicating a sentiment that says, “I may or may not have experienced it myself and I take no blame for it, but you know it's true.”
