I feel that we are friends enough to admit something to y'all. I tend to be a bit of a "pack rat." I'm sure there's probably some deep seated psychological reason for this. Or maybe it's because if I throw things away, then I'll have to empty the trash more often. Whatever the hidden reason within my often befuddled mind is, the fact of the matter remains that I have a tendency to hold onto things probably longer than I should. Not just big things either. I still have grocery store receipts from three weeks ago. You never know when you might need that receipt.
Now, you would think that with the advent of computer technology, this would be easier to handle. Less paper means less "stuff," right? That's not necessarily true. Although, I do sign up for "paperless" options whenever I can with bank statements, etc. That does help alleviate some of the vast abundance of paper I tend to accumulate over an extended period of time. However, one quick glance at my computer screen would quickly reveal a vast multitude of digital photos and documents from weeks and even months ago. My computer desktop is beginning to look like the digital equivalent of a two-car garage, without room for a car.
Our resident "computer guy" here at the paper has laughingly suggested I make folders for much of the material that currently occupies my computer desktop. The only problem with that is, once I put something into a folder, I have a tendency to forget what folder in which the much needed document, photo, etc. is tucked away. I find it better to simply leave everything on my desktop where I can eas … wait a minute, where was that story I was looking for? I know it's on the desktop somewhere. Hmmmm.
One of these days, I probably should give my computer here at work a good "housecleaning." Did I say that I am sometimes a bit of a procrastinator as well? Next year, I plan to make tackling that issue one of my New Year's resolutions. So, with the attitude of "no time like the present," I am officially undertaking the task of clearing some items from my computer desktop. I'm just trying to decide if I need to hang onto the 2018 high school baseball schedule.
