The Madison Police Department (MPD) has reported that during the early morning hours of Friday, July 24, the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old occurred within the city limits. MPD Chief Chris Cooks reported that the suspect has been arrested and “there is no further threat to the community as this was an isolated incident. Several social media posts identified the victim as Jamarion Knight. Chief Cooks identified the suspect as Keyon McCray, 19, of Madison. McCray has been booked into the Madison County Jail on charges of premeditated first degree murder, possession of a stolen firearm and marijuana possession with intent to sell/manufacture/deliver.
Soon after news of the shooting was heard, a flood of posts could be seen on social media sharing memories of Knight, who had the nickname of “Muscle” among his friends and Cowboy teammates. “Jamarion had a smile that could light up a room,” said Head Football Coach Price Harris. “[He] worked extremely hard to become the best version of himself on the field and in the classroom. Another tragedy taking one of our young men too soon. Prayers for the family, friends and teammates that are hurting. Muscle, you were valuable! I will miss you.” Coach Carl Joseph described him as “a great kid to be around.”
Chief Cooks acknowledged the assistance of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), which lead to a timely arrest being made in the case. This is an ongoing investigation and, as such, information is limited. More information will be made available as it is released.
