The Madison County Board of County Commissioners is warning residents of a new scam making its way throughout the county. The scam involves individuals claiming to be from the Madison County Planning and Zoning Department.
Here’s the way the scam works: a person receives an email from what appears to be Madison County Planning and Zoning Department. These emails contain what appear to be legitimate invoices or fee notices from the department. If the intended victim responds, the scammer may provide instructions to wire money to an account that is actually controlled by the scammers.
Citizens are reminded to never send payment online or wire money based solely on an email invoice or payment instructions. If you receive an email and want to verify its authenticity, please contact the Madison County Planning and Zoning Department directly. You may call the department at (850) 973-6785, or send an email to Mhoschar@madisoncountyfl.com.
As a rule of thumb, if you are ever suspicious of any correspondence, either by email or over the phone, always contact the proposed source directly. This will help protect yourself and others.
