For those experienced bicyclists who love a good nature trail, the Dirty Pecan Gravel Ride is probably a familiar phrase that yields much excitement. For those outside of the cycling world, however, this annual event may not be a household name. Whether you are into rural biking or not, you may want to make a note in your calendar, as hundreds of experienced bikers take to the roadways to enjoy a lengthy ride along miles of the most scenic dirt roads that North Florida and South Georgia have to offer.
Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, hundreds of cyclists will set off along an unsupported ride, participating in the ride-length of their choice. Participants choose from a ride of 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, or 200 miles, and are charged with their own needs, welfare, equipment, navigation, food and drink. The courses are not marked, and no assistance will be provided. The start and finish for all routes will be located at the UF Extension office located 2.8 miles west of the traffic circle in Monticello, at 2729 W. Washington St. Primitive camping will be available at the start location with bathrooms and shower access. Bathrooms will be open all night starting on Friday, March 3. There will be no hookups or electricity available for RV Campers, and all must be registered to enter the property. Food will be served during designated times to those who purchased meal tickets. There will be a bonfire on Friday and Saturday night.
Registration will be open until Wednesday, March 1. To register or to purchase meal tickets, visit www.bikereg.com/dirtypecan. All registered riders are strongly encouraged to download any maps before arriving at the facility. There will be no internet access to enable downloading once you get there, and setting off on your route without GPS is not recommended. A list of all maps can be accessed on the Dirty Pecan Facebook page.
For those who are not participating in this year's Dirty Pecan Gravel Ride, be mindful and aware on the roads while driving. Last year's ride showed a turnout of over 600 registered cyclists, all traveling the unpaved and scenic roads of Monticello and Jefferson County. Motorists can expect to see a few dedicated cyclists on the morning of March 4, so it is recommended that those not participating in this event plan your commute accordingly to ensure good travel-time and safety for everyone on the roadways.
