A Madison County man was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy Saturday night, Aug. 23, after allegedly pointing a handgun at law enforcement during a tense standoff at a home in Greenville. According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 9:53 p.m. to a 911 call in the 11000 block of U.S. Highway 90. The caller reported that a man was acting irrationally, armed with a handgun, and had fired several rounds outside the residence. When deputies arrived, the suspect allegedly pointed the gun in their direction and fired again. Deputies then observed the man on the front porch, holding the firearm to his own head. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the man ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon and made threats to harm himself and others. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, but during the encounter, the man reportedly pointed the gun at them again, causing a deputy to fire his weapon, striking the suspect. Deputies secured the firearm and began administering life-saving measures. Madison County Fire Rescue, which had been staged nearby for safety, responded and transported the man to Madison County Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No deputies or other civilians were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol. The man was identified as 63-year-old Ray Boothe.
