On Friday, Jan. 6, the Madison County High School (MCHS) junior varsity and varsity basketball teams hosted the Eagles of North Florida Christian School. By the end of the evening, the
Cowboys had swept the Eagles with scores of 71- 48 and 59-54.
The junior varsity match was the first to take the court. After falling behind 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys took control of the contest, and by halftime, had a 34-19 lead. The Eagles were able to cut into the Cowboys' lead during the third period, which ended with the Cowboys still in the lead, 49-40.
The Cowboys turned up the heat to finish the game with a 71-48 victory.
The varsity match saw the Cowboys fall behind early, as the Eagles opened the game with a 10-0 scoring run. Later, in the first quarter, the Cowboys were able to begin crawling out of the deep hole in which they found themselves and by the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys had cut into the Eagles lead. The first quarter ended with a 20-14 score, with the Eagles holding the lead. The Cowboys continued to outscore the Eagles during the second period, and by the time
intermission rolled around, the Eagles had just a one-point, 29-28 edge over the Cowboys. The
Cowboys were able to take their first lead of the game with approximately two minutes remaining in the third period, when Jonathan Akins hit a layup shot to put the Cowboys ahead. The score remained close until the Cowboys had built up a 44-40 lead at the end of the third quarter. During the final period, the Cowboys selfishly held on to their lead until the final buzzer sounded with the Cowboys ahead, 59-54.
LaBron Lee led the Cowboys with 13 points. O'Shea Akins and Orient Livingston also scored in double digits with 10 points apiece. Jamie Hampton scored seven points while snagging 11 total rebounds, including 10 defensive boards.
The Cowboys will return to their home court on Thursday, Jan. 19, when they will host the Cougars
of Godby High School. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams will be in action. Tipoff for the junior varsity contest is slated for 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game in the MCHS gymnasium.
