According to a report from the Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), on Wednesday, May 31, at approximately 1:50 p.m., Calvin Malone, 58, of Greenville, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct/brawling fighting corrupt moral decency. Malone currently holds Seat Two on the Greenville Town Council.
The report, filed by MCSO Deputy Scott Newman, states that he was dispatched to Haffye Hayes Park, in Greenville, in reference to an individual at a construction site who was refusing to leave. When Deputy Newman and MCSO Deputy Bish made contact with the individual, later identified as Malone, Malone was “within the taped off construction site and yelling unintelligibly.” Malone was requested to leave the work area, to which he stated he would not comply with that lawful request. Deputy Newman goes on to state that, “due to [Malone's] disorderly behavior and continued escalation, he was detained in double locked wrist restraints. [Malone] began pulling away and braced his body, at which time he was escorted by [Deputy Newman] and Deputy Bish to the back of [Deputy Newman's] patrol vehicle.”
Deputy Newman spoke with Wayne Malone, Public Works Director for the Town of Greenville, who had called law enforcement to the site. Wayne stated he saw Calvin standing on their construction equipment, causing them to stop work. Wayne further stated he contacted Greenville Mayor Brittni Brown, who advised Wayne to call law enforcement, due to Calvin's disruptive actions and refusal to leave the area.
Deputy Newman spoke with Mayor Brown, who was at the scene. Brown stated when she arrived, she observed Calvin standing on the portable dock equipment and refusing to allow the workers to continue installing the portable dock at the Haffye Hayes pond. Brown told Deputy Newman that Calvin is a councilman with the Town of Greenville who has been opposed to the installation of the floating dock, and “he was attempting to stop it from being completed himself.” Both Mayor Brown and Wayne Malone provided sworn written statements in addition to their verbal statements.
Calvin admitted to Deputy Bish that he was aware of his disorderly behavior, and he “has issues with getting upset and acting out.”
Calvin was placed under arrest and transported to the Madison County Jail without further incident.
