On Saturday, March 4, over 100 volunteers donned gloves and safety vests to take part in the annual “Clean up Madison County” event. Afterward, the streets and roadways in Madison County seemed a bit cleaner, if only for a little while.
Clean up Madison County began as an effort to make Madison County more attractive, after it was learned that a business man decided not to locate his business in Madison County, because of all the trash and litter he saw along the roads of the county. This prompted local community leaders to organize an event to clean up after the thoughtless people who carelessly toss litter and trash along Madison roadways.
During the county commission meeting on Wednesday, March 8, Madison County Sheriff David Harper commented on the event. “I was pleased to see as many young people involved as I did,” said Sheriff Harper. “If we're going to make a difference, that's where it's going to happen.”
A special thank you to Webber, formerly known as Ferrovial Services, who helped to coordinate the cleanup efforts and pass out supplies. They were also on hand at Winn Dixie to help collect over 2.27 tons of waste and 41 tires. This does not include waste that may have been taken to the county drop offs by volunteers.
Madison County Chamber of Commerce did a great job marketing and advertising to help get the community involved. A special shout out to Clay Blair, with Madison County Solid Waste, for properly disposing of the trash.
