The Madison City Commission held a special meeting on Wednesday, July 16, hoping to fill the district four vacancy created by the resignation of Byron Poore. Former commissioner Jim Stanley was elected to fill Poore’s seat and take on the roll as mayor.
Per the Commission’s normal procedure, they began by asking if there were any candidates for the position present. Renae Alexander, a former candidate for the seat, expressed her desire for the position. She was followed by former commissioner and mayor, Jim Stanley, who has a long history of public service in the community, having also served as the Emergency Management director for almost two decades. Vera Hill also asked to be considered for the post. “I don’t have any experience, but I can learn like [Interim City Manager] Mr. Brown did,” said Hill.
Commissioner Ina Thompson nominated Stanley, citing his previous years of service on the commission. After the vote, Stanley was approved with a unanimous 4-0 vote. Next, Commissioner Judy Townsend nominated Stanley for the role of mayor , also pointing out his experience and ability to take on the job without any preparation needed. Again, the commissioners voted in favor of Stanley with a 4-0 vote.
Stanley, whose term ends in March of 2026, last served as a commissioner seven years ago and was mayor in 2013. Stanley expressed his desire to do whatever he could to help the city move forward. “We have got to work together and get along,” said Stanley. “You can do anything if you work together.”
