Cards For Hospitalized Kids brings joy to those who need it most

Jason Futch news@greenepublishing.com As a child, Illinois resident Jen Rubino was frequently in the hospital, undergoing over 20 surgeries due to bone and tissue disease. The newfound disease forced her to quit gymnastics and left her feeling sad and alone each time she entered the hospital halls. Then, in 2011, after undergoing a major hip reconstruction surgery at Lurie Children's Hospital, she spent a week in intensive care. While recovering from the surgery, Rubino received a handmade card from a hospital volunteer, which brought her joy. From there, she felt inspired to return the favor and do this for other children who are faced with similar circumstances. Shortly after her recovery, Rubino founded Cards For Hospitalized Kids (CFHK). Since its founding, the organization, has grown from a small, localized nonprofit organization to a nationwide outreach, bringing smiles to many children recovering at children's hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses. Many of the children are recovering from surgeries as a result of childhood disease or cancer. Over 500,000 cards have been sent to children by thousands of card-making volunteers from all over the world. The organization distributes general cards monthly as well as cards for major holidays. Because of her work in keeping kids happy while hospitalized, Rubino has received numerous accolades and awards, including the "Daily Point of Light Award," by the Points of Light organization, the "Girl in Action" award, by Teen Voices Magazine, and the "Prudential Spirit of Community Award," from Prudential Financial. She was also honored by the Illinois State Assembly in 2013. The organization continues to do good work in ensuring, just for a moment, children can forget their ailments as they receive a card from someone who cares for them from afar.
