Despite some much needed rainshowers over recent days, the heightened risk of wildfires has not abated. Because of this, the recently enacted burn ban for Madison County continues to be in effect. This means all outdoor burning is still prohibited. This includes debris burning, trash burning, campfires, fire pits, burn barrels and fireworks. Exceptions to the burn ban include agricultural, forest management or land-clearing burns conducted with the authorization of the Florida Forest Service, and with proper fire suppression equipment and personnel on hand. Violations of this burn ban could result in fines and/or legal action.
Residents are reminded that smoky conditions stemming from the ongoing Mallory Swamp fire in Lafayette County are still present. Everyone, especially those with respiratory conditions, is urged to use caution when outdoors, since smoke levels and fire activity can quickly shift.
