Recently, Boyz to Kings Inc., of Madison, received a $1,500 grant from Capital City Bank, in Madison. The grant was an opportunity provided by Capital City as a way of giving back to support locals of Madison County who serve the community.
Boyz to Kings is a 501(c)(3) prevention program, founded by Merv Mattair in 2009, that focuses on teaching, mentoring and empowering young men to prepare them for college, career and life. They do this by focusing on 12 main principles, such as honoring family, respecting elders, never giving up and staying physically fit. Boyz to Kings has affected the lives of many young men from Madison County, including the 40 boys currently in the organization.
The local organization applied for the Capital City grant in April. They found out they had received it in the middle of July and picked their check up at Capital City Bank on Saturday, July 17. “To be honest, we do not seek money,” Mattair commented. “We have been a 'potluck' organization for so long. The fact that a bank was willing to support us, it was a real good feeling.”
Boyz to Kings' services are free to all youth and parents. They meet with youth four times every week, covering topics such as life skills, social skills and anti gun violence. Boyz to Kings has elevated from just a local youth organization to a recognized Prevention Program with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. The program's motto has always been “Not This One,” partnering with parents and the Madison County Sheriff's Office to make sure that no young man slips through the cracks. “We refuse to lose any one of them,” Mattair stated. Every contribution made towards Boyz to Kings goes towards continuing excellent and passionate services.
