The Lee Town Council met for their monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 7 at 7 p.m., at Kinsey Hall. The agenda only had one item for discussion: barn quilts. Janet Moses of Florida Barn Quilt came to speak with the council about the possibility of Lee purchasing a barn quilt. Barn quilts are not made with cloth but with wood and paint. The original concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother, Maxine, and her Appalachian heritage by having a painted quilt hung on her barn in Adams County, Ohio. Now over 30 states have started quilt trails to not only show off their heritage but also to attract tourist. Moses told the council that the barn quilts come in three sizes: three feet by three feet, four feet by four feet and eight feet by eight feet. The cost for the smaller sizes is roughly $350 and the larger size is around $450 if she paints them but if they wanted to do it by themselves or with a group, the cost would be roughly $250. Town Manager John Anderson updated the council on the Family Dollar. As of right now, the project is set to begin in early September. A budget workshop is scheduled for Monday, August 10 at 7 p.m. The next Lee Town Council meeting will be September 1 at 7 p.m., at Kinsey Hall.
