Out of over 450 in attendance at the 2025 Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) “Unleashing You” Youth Summit, in Orlando, four area young people were recognized. All four are involved with the Boyz to Kings and Girlz to Queens program in their communities. Two young people from Madison and two from Hamilton County were honored with awards.
Sky Brinson and Jaiden Weatherspoon, both from Madison were honored for Outstanding Community Service. This award included a trophy and a $250 cash prize. Hamlton County youth Troy Merrick and Joy Strawder, from Hamilton County, received Outstanding Academics honors. They also came home with trophies and $250 each.
The Boyz to Kings and Girlz to Queens dropout prevention and youth mentoring programs have garnered statewide recognition for their success in empowering young people to excel, mentally, physically and spiritually. They are currently seeking volunteers to work with the Girlz to Queens program in Hamilton County. Anyone interested should contact Founder and CEO Merv Mattair at (850) 673-1003.
