On May 26, 1956, two Florida A&M University (FAMU) students rode in “whites only” seats in a Tallahassee bus. When the driver demanded that the young women, Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson, move to the “colored” section in the back of the bus, their refusal to move landed them behind bars.
