Only two weeks left until the general election. As the election approaches, I ask you to consider who will work the hardest to bring the Madison County School District together for the common goal of bettering the student experience, improving our schools, and lifting Madison County as a whole.
I love Madison County. This is home. But we've got to be willing to have an honest conversation about where we're headed.
The truth is, Madison County is slowly dying. We're losing people, we're losing businesses, we're losing restaurants and we're losing kids out of our public schools. Meanwhile, you can look around at some of the counties surrounding us and see school districts that are holding steady or growing.
We've got to ask ourselves why.
Because our schools and our community go hand in hand. If we want Madison County to grow again, then we've got to have a school system that young families want to be a part of.
That means better academics. It means supporting our teachers and staff. It means giving our kids opportunities. It means spending the taxpayers' money wisely. And above everything else, it means remembering who we're here for—the children.
There's an old saying that I've always liked: “Character isn't measured by how you treat those above you, but by how you treat those below you.”
I believe that.
It does not matter to me whether you're the superintendent or the janitor, a principal or a bus driver, a teacher or a cafeteria worker. You ought to be treated with dignity and respect. And when a parent or a student comes to us with a concern, they deserve that same respect.
Now, I'm not going to tell you I have every answer, because I don't. And I don't believe any one person can fix everything that's wrong.
But I can promise you this: I'll listen. I'll ask questions. I'll do my homework. And I'll make the best decision I can based on what's right for our kids and what's right for Madison County.
Because this is bigger than one election or one seat on the School Board.
This is about what we're going to leave behind for our children and our grandchildren.
I still believe in Madison County. I still believe in our people. And I believe our best days can still be ahead of us.
But nobody is coming to save us.
If we want a better Madison County, we're going to have to roll up our sleeves, come together, and build it ourselves.
